ICAS-Maths 2017 Intensive

(Classes commence Apr’17)

Suitable for students from Year 2 to Year 12 (Std 2 to Form 6)

TeamMathicians’ Achievement in ICAS & AMC 2016

There were more than one hundred TeamMathics students taking part in ICAS and AMC last year and they won 3 ICAS Gold Medals, 6 AMC Prize Medals, 32 High Distinction and 125 Distinction awards.

Well done, TeamMathicians!

TeamMathics as the official appointed Exclusive Training Partner for AMO, SASMO, SIMOC and AIMO, will continue to help students develop their strategic planning and proving skills. The process of acquiring these skills will enable our students to be stretched a bit at a time so that they can enjoy success and eventually prepare them for solving challenging and non-routine questions in Maths Olympiad competitions.

What is ICAS?

With the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) by University of New South Wales, students can learn, grow and reach their full potential. ICAS quality skills-based assessments give a deeper understanding of students’ learning needs and standards in Digital Technologies, Science, Writing, English, and Mathematics.

Year 2 students can use 35 minutes to answer 30 MCQ (multiple choice questions). Meanwhile for Year 3 to 5, 45 minutes to answer 40 MCQ. And for Year 6 to 12, 60 minutes to answer 35 MCQ and 5 non-MCQ (whole number answer).

For more info: ICAS Official Website

Advantages for sitting ICAS-Maths and AMC assessments every year

All participants receive a worldwide-recognised certificate (High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Participation) and a detailed report showing how they perform in answering each question, with comparison to wider statistics. Using this data, parents and teachers can easily track the progress of student learning through each year level, build up strengths and target weaknesses. This way, students are able to continually improve and move closer to achieving their highest potential.

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) by Australian Mathematics Trust provides an opportunity for students to discover their problem-solving talent. Questions in the papers are ordered in increasing difficulty. The earlier questions may use familiar mathematics while the later questions are more difficult and are intended to challenge. The last 5 questions are equivalent to Maths Olympiad standard.

AMC is open to all Year 3 to 12 students. They are allowed to use 60 minutes (Primary) and 75 minutes (Secondary) to answer 25 MCQ and 5 non-MCQ (whole number answer).

What’s a puzzle?

A puzzle is a game, problem, or toy that tests a person’s ingenuity or knowledge. In a puzzle, one is required to put pieces together in a logical way, in order to arrive at the correct solution of the puzzle. There are different types of puzzles for different ages, such as crossword puzzles, word-search puzzles, number puzzles, logic puzzles, etc.

Puzzles are often devised as a form of entertainment but they can also arise from mathematical or logistical problems. In such cases, the solution may be a significant contribution to someone’s mathematical thinking and reasoning. Solutions of puzzles often require the recognition of patterns and the creation of a particular kind of order.

Kangaroo Math Competition (KMC) 2017 Intensive

KMC 2017 Contest Day – March 16 Thursday

KMC 2017 Intensive Schedule

Kangaroo Math Competition (KMC) is an annual international math competition for primary and secondary school students.

In the early 1980s, Peter O’Holloran, a math teacher at Sydney, started a math competition in Australian schools. The competition was in multiple choice format, which meant that thousands of pupils could participate at the same time. The contest, which was known as the Australian Mathematical National Contest, was a tremendous success.

In 1991, two French teachers, André Deledicq and Jean Pierre Boudine, decided to start a competition in France under the name “Kangaroo” (or Kangourou in French) to pay tribute to their Australian friends. In the first edition, 120,000 students took part. In the first few years, the contest grew until more than 20 European countries participated. The countries jointly formed the Association Kangourou sans Frontieres (AKSF), which in English means the Association of Kangaroo Without Borders.

Fast forward to 2013, Malaysia was unanimously elected to join the AKSF, at the annual AKSF meeting in Protaras Beach, Cyprus. Mr. Suhaimi Ramly was appointed as the country representative. Mr. Suhaimi is the coach for the national team to the International Mathematical Olympiad since 2007, and has been active with organizing many mathematics camps and competitions in the country.
